Step 1

Select between Micro -or- Macro referring to the table below in which typical ranges are provided for the Diagonal Fields-of-View (FOVs) and Working Distance (WD) requirements.

Options such as Coaxial Illumination and Fine Focus may be useful in certain situations.

Coaxial illumination microscopy is a reflection technique in which light is directed down from within the body of the microscope, down through the objective or lens attachment, onto the sample. Reflected light is collected by the same optics and is used to form the image at the camera. It is very helpful for light-starved situations, which are quite common when inspecting objects under magnification.
Fine focus: a way to move the focal plane (the plane in sample-space at which a focused image is observed) up and down within a small range when imaging objects that are not flat or in the same plane. In such cases, the Fine Focus feature prevents the need to move the entire optical stack up and down on the Z-axis.

Step 4

Among the series that are selected in Step 3, one may choose a series based on a performance/price tradeoff between three main choices:

(*) cameras with larger formats may show some vignetting at the lower magnification settings.

Step 5

A system with the desired performance can be identified via the “series” table. The Working Distance can be selected directly from the table and the FOV for a particular optical format of the camera uniquely identifies the optimal combination. The table also shows the estimated performance [FOV, limiting resolution and system magnification] of the combination.

The recommended configuration is shown as a single part number for procurement. This part number represents the combination of components that can be easily screwed together (as shown on the assembly sketch) to assemble a C-mount compatible system.
